Actually, Mae Malai is just a normal, contemporary little place with no attraction at all. Emphasized is sometimes the market, who is not too small and attracts people from the wider surroundings. But it's just a normal market as there is any of the kind in any Thai town.

The place is situated along road 107, what is a broad highway with heavy traffic, which leads to Mae Sai, bypassing Chiang Rai. Not far west of Mae Malai runs Ping River, one of the most important tributaries of Chao Phraya River. The mountain chains here run generally in north-south direction, as they are an offshoot of the Himalayas. Since Mae Malai lies in one of the valleys, to the east as well as to the west is a scenic mountain panorama to watch. It's very worth to make some trips into the forested surroundings from here.
